Peio Azcoaga
Postdoctoral researcher

Peio graduated in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of the Basque Country in 2019, where he carried out an experimental Bachelor’s Thesis in the laboratory of Dr. Edurne Berra at CIC bioGUNE, exploring the hypoxia and cancer field. He completed a Master’s Degree in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine at the same university. Subsequently, he pursued his doctoral thesis (2020–2024) in the Breast Cancer Group at IIS Biogipuzkoa, where he had done the Master’ before, and the Molecular and Functional Biomarkers Group at CIC biomaGUNE. The PhD project, directed by Prof. María M. Caffarel and Prof. Jesús Ruiz-Cabello, was funded by a ‘Collaborative PhD Studentship’ grant. He performed an international research stay at the laboratory of Prof. Sarah-Maria Fendt (Leuven, Belgium), expert in metabolomics techniques, and was granted an EMBO fellowship. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher in the Breast Cancer Group at IIS Biogipuzkoa, working on various projects focused on studying the effect of cytokines and their mechanisms in breast cancer progression. Recently, he was selected to give short talks at the EACR Cancer Metabolism Congress in Bilbao, 2024 and EACR Congress 2025. In addition to his research activities, he loves teaching to students and newcomers to the lab and has participated in multiple science outreach activities. He is also a member of ASEICA (Spanish Association for Cancer Research) and an ambassador for EACR (The European Association for Cancer Research), where he assists in organizing and participates in various training activities. In his free time you can find him running across the city or in the tennis court always thinking about ATP (but the biological one).
